The nature
Abruzzo
is known as “The green area of Europe”,
hence it is no surprise that over a
third of it is protected.
Bears and chamois, mountainsides of
rock and forest, sweet hillside villages
and magnificent sandy beaches. Between
the high peaks of the Gran Sasso, the
Majella and the Velino and the golden
line of coastland, Abruzzo’s nature
creates a picture of great variety and
scenery, that can be appreciated all
year round.
Thanks
to the national parks, a reserve network
and naturalistic oasis, Abruzzo’s nature
is suitably guarded today, and can be
easily reached both by enthusiastic
individuals as well as in organised
groups.
All of this without having to relinquish
a modern tourist service which is
well-equipped with hotels, pensions,
residences, apartments, campsites,
sports centres, tourist information
points, accident and emergency services,
chemist’s and banks.
The sea
Miles
and miles of beach, cliffs and fine sand
for holidays that can astound, relax and
reinvigorate you.
The Abruzzo coast is one of the most
important and appreciated tourist
attractions in the region, due to the
tranquility of the beach and towns, the
calm waters, the pine forests and the
clean air.
With the arrival of evening, the coast
changes pace: make way for the lively
“Adriatic nights”, the locals get lively
until the small hours of the morning and
there is fun to be had for young people
of all ages. For those looking for a
sporting holiday, there is sailing,
windsurfing, canoeing and fishing.
Art and Architecture
Roman
churches and castles, ancient burial
grounds and museums, fortified retreats
and villages.
Between the mountains and the
Sea, a rich variety of works of art and
monuments are waiting for the visitors
that come to Abruzzo.
Besides the monuments and renowned
collections such as St.Maria of
Collemaggio, the ancient streets of
Scanno, and the National Archaeological
Museum of Chieti and Rocca Calascio,
there are tens of wonders less-noted,
dispersed throughout the region, just
waiting to thrill the traveller. Abruzzo
has given birth to the poet D’annunzio,
writers and philosophers such as Silone
and Croce, as well as painters like
Michetti, Palizzi and Cascella and many
other artists.
Tradition
The
strong ties to tradition are apparent in
the colourful sagras and shows that
breathe life into Abruzzo in summer.
These are a must to be seen and enjoyed.
A calendar packed with important
dates, when there are numerous shows and
representations based on folklore and
religion, colourful scenes of daily
life, which are both fun and surely
bizarre in the eyes of the outsider.
During the summer theatre, music, comedy
festivals, and historical and religious
commemorations take place in the town
squares, parks, castles, and beaches, in
the big cities as well as in the smaller
towns.
Handcraft, Typical Products and
Gastronomy
In
Abruzzo the skill of handicrafts has far
reaching roots. Centuries of secrets and
intuition big and small, fed by
necessity and passion, handed down from
father to son.
Beaten iron and copper, noble
metals with an elaborate filigree
finish, precious wood, ceramics and
textiles, leather and hides make for
beautiful displays in workshops where
the atmosphere from times past blends
with the enthusiasm of new generations.
New generations who appreciate the art
and skill behind these crafts.
The true
stars of Abruzzo cuisine are the simple
and true products of both land and sea,
together with extra virgin olive oil and
wine. An appetising array of tastes from
well-known pasta, saffron and cheeses,
cured meats and dairy products, to
exquisite meat and mouth-watering,
particular traditional desserts, all of
which you can buy in the local shops.
